Sea Horses of Sydney

Pygmy Pipe Horse Big Bellied Sea Horse
The Pygmy Pipe Horse is one of the most difficult to find because of its incredible camouflage and cryptic tassles and colouration. The Big Bellied Sea Horse, Hippocampus abdominalis, grows to 13 cm in Sydney and 35 cm in Tasmania. The rich cold waters off Tasmania contain much more nutrients especially Mysid shrimps on which they feed.
Leafy Sea Dragon White's sea horse

Leafy Sea Dragons are very hard to see against the backdrop of kelp on which they live. This one was at Kangaroo Island.

White's Sea Horse is the smaller and more common sea horse around Sydney. It has a distinct crown on its head.
